The short version
Kilometa helps you keep a car logbook. It isn't tax advice, and it can't promise your logbook will be accepted, so check your trips and ask a tax agent if you're unsure.
Please don't use your phone while driving. Your logbook lives on your iPhone, so export a copy now and then.
Who makes Kilometa
Kilometa is made by Alic Lonsdale, an independent developer in Australia who publishes apps under the name Cylix. In these terms, “I” and “me” means Alic Lonsdale, and “you” means the person using the app.
Agreeing to these terms
By downloading or using Kilometa, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
These terms apply alongside Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which covers every app you get from the App Store. If the two ever conflict, Apple's agreement wins.
Not tax advice
Kilometa is a record keeping tool. It isn't tax, financial or legal advice.
The business use percentage, the cents per km estimate and the 12 week logbook progress are there to help you keep records. They don't tell you what you can claim. It's up to you to make sure your logbook is accurate, complete and meets the ATO's rules. If you're not sure, ask a registered tax agent.
I can't promise that the ATO, your tax agent or anyone else will accept a logbook made with Kilometa.
Accuracy
Distances come from your iPhone's GPS and from Apple Maps. GPS isn't perfect. The signal can drop in tunnels, car parks and some city streets, and the distance recorded can be different to your car's odometer.
Please check your trips and fix anything that looks wrong before you rely on them. Odometer readings, purposes and categories are whatever you enter, so it's worth taking care with them.
Drive safely
Never use your phone in a way that breaks road rules or takes your attention off the road. Start and end drives while you're parked, and set things up before you drive off. You're responsible for how you use the app in the car.
Your data
Your trips, routes and cars are saved on your iPhone. I don't have a copy, so I can't get them back if they're lost. Deleting the app deletes your logbook.
To be safe, export your logbook regularly and keep your iPhone backed up. The Kilometa Privacy Policy explains what the app uses and where it goes.
Using the app fairly
Please don't copy, change, reverse engineer or resell Kilometa, or use it for anything illegal. The logbooks you export are yours to use however you like.
Apple services
Kilometa uses Apple services like Apple Maps. Apple provides these under its own terms, and I'm not responsible for them.
Changes to the app
I may update, change or stop offering Kilometa, or any feature in it, at any time. I'll aim to explain big changes in the app's release notes and on the What's new page.
Australian Consumer Law
Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Some consumer guarantees can't be excluded, and these terms don't try to exclude them.
Limits on liability
Kilometa is provided as it is. As far as the law allows, I'm not liable for any loss that comes from using the app. That includes a tax claim being reduced or rejected, lost data, or a problem caused by inaccurate GPS.
Where the law doesn't let me exclude liability but does let me limit it, my liability is limited to supplying the app again.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If you keep using the app after a change, the new terms apply.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Australia.
