The short version
Kilometa has no accounts and no servers. Your drives, routes and cars are saved on your iPhone and nowhere else. The app only uses your location while you're recording a drive you started.
There are no ads and no tracking. I don't sell your personal information.
Who makes Kilometa
Kilometa is a car logbook app for tracking the kilometres you drive for work. It's made by me, Alic Lonsdale. I'm an independent developer in Australia and I publish my apps under the name Cylix.
I follow the Australian Privacy Principles when I handle personal information.
What stays on your phone
Kilometa doesn't have accounts and I don't run any servers for it. What you record is saved on your iPhone. It's never sent to me.
That includes your location and routes. The app only uses GPS while a drive is being recorded. It uses it to measure the distance, draw your route on the map and show the roads you've explored.
It includes motion sensor data too. During a drive the app reads the accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and motion activity to build your driving report. This all happens on your phone. The raw sensor data isn't saved.
Your driving score and driving events are only for you. They aren't shared with me, insurers or anyone else.
And it includes the trips and cars you enter. That means dates, times, distances, addresses, categories, trip purposes, notes, odometer readings, registration numbers and other vehicle details.
Permissions
Location. Kilometa asks to use your location while you're using the app. Once you start a drive, it keeps recording in the background so your kilometres still count when your phone is locked or you're in another app. You'll see the blue location indicator while this happens. It stops as soon as the drive ends. The app never asks for “Always” access and doesn't track you outside a drive you started.
Motion and fitness. The app uses this to spot harsh braking and fast acceleration, and to tell when you've left the car.
Notifications. If your car hasn't moved for a few minutes during a drive, the app sends a notification on your phone asking if your drive is over. These notifications are created on your iPhone. They don't go through a server.
You can change any of these in the iPhone Settings app under Kilometa. The app can't record drives without location.
Apple services
Kilometa uses Apple Maps for the map, address search, directions and travel times. It also uses it to turn GPS coordinates into street addresses. Apple handles these requests under Apple's own privacy policy.
Live Activities on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island are created on your iPhone.
If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may send me crash reports and basic information about how the app is used. This doesn't include your name or contact details. You can turn this off in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Sharing your logbook
When you export your logbook, the PDF or CSV file includes your trip details. That can include addresses, odometer readings and vehicle details. You decide where it goes. Once you email it or save it somewhere else, like Files or a cloud service, it's handled by that app or service.
Where your information is processed
Your logbook stays on your iPhone. Apple may process the information they receive in other countries, including the United States.
Keeping your information safe
Your logbook is protected by your iPhone's own security, like your passcode, Face ID and the encryption built into iOS. Because I don't hold a copy, there's nothing on my side that could be lost or leaked.
Your logbook is normally included in your iCloud or computer backup. Those backups are handled by Apple or your computer under their own security.
How long it's kept
Your trips and cars stay on your iPhone until you delete them or delete the app.
Your choices and rights
Your logbook is only stored on your phone, so you can view, change, export or delete it in the app whenever you like. I don't have a copy, so there's nothing for me to access, correct or delete. If you've contacted me by email, you can ask me what I hold, ask me to correct it or ask me to delete it.
If you're in the EU or UK, you also have the right to object to how your information is used and to complain to your local data protection authority.
I don't sell your personal information.
Complaints
If you have a privacy concern, please contact me first. I'll look into it and reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with my answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Children
Kilometa isn't made for children under 13. I don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
I may update this policy when the app changes. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. If a change affects how your information is used, I'll mention it in the app's release notes.
